Fox Boy (Portrait)
Modelled on the metal sculpture installed in Menstrie’s Midtown Gardens in 2008, Fox Boy is a local legend given a new lease of life by the artist Andy Scott, whose incredible Kelpies are among Scotland’s starring attractions.
Based on the tall but true tale of the local lad who adopted a pair of orphaned foxes from the hills behind his village, and was often seen walking them like tiny wild terriers along the highways and byways of Menstrie after the fact, the figure of Fox Boy as seen here sits atop a water wheel, depicting both past and present in the process.
Rendered across four layers of sustainably-sourced and hand-dyed birch ply, our Fox Boy incorporates elements of modernity in the hoodie and trainers the wee guy wears, at the same time as nodding toward the history of the milling village in which the original artwork is situated. Take particular note of the piece’s nods to nature – namely the buzzard representing the pair who live in the woods – and the wider world, as exemplified by the maple leaf beside the boy’s hand, which symbolises Menstrie’s connection to Canada.
Formats / Options
Fox Boy is available in both landscape and portrait orientation, and with a variety of gradients applied to the lowermost layer. In portrait format, Fox Boy measures 366mm high by 275mm wide, with a depth of approximately 12mm across its four total layers. Gradients available include natural birch, evening daze and daylight bright.
Each order also comes with an engraved wooden art card telling the bittersweet story of the Fox Boy in full.
An optional protective plate made of clear 3mm acrylic can be affixed to the front of the piece with several beautiful brass screws, the better to prevent dust ingress and accidental damage.
Other
Please note that the pictures illustrating this listing are of several exemplar specimens of our Fox Boy in portrait orientation, and while we take measures to ensure consistency from one run to another, you can expect your item to feature some slight variance. But that, in no small part, is what makes these pieces so special: the uniqueness of the natural wood grain and the consequential intensity of the stains and dyes we apply means that every completed piece we produce truly is one-of-a-kind.
Plans are available in the shop if you fancy trying your hand at making your own version of our Fox Boy. You may also be interested in our other products based on the works of Andy Scott, including - coming soon - The Kelpies themselves.
