A Few Favourites
There are few symbols more closely associated with Scotland than the bagpipes, and the sight of the pipers who play them is to many preferable to the... shall we say “intense” sound said instruments produce.
Pipers at the Gates, named after the sublime 1967 Pink Floyd album, is a striking showcase of contrast in its colours and its subjects. The first piece in our Silhouette Series depicts a pair of pipers posed in such a way as to suggest stillness. The flock of birds in the background are anything but. Disturbed no doubt by the unearthly noise of Scotland’s traditional instruments, the birds’ dynamic movement – up, up and away – takes them high into the sky, surrendering the ground to the pipers, who have perhaps paused in their playing to study the disturbance.
Formats / Options
Redolent of a sense of release and freedom, Pipers at the Gates is square in its orientation, available in both medium and large sizes, and with a variety of gradients applied to the lowermost layer.
The medium size measures 200mm wide by 200mm high whilst the large measures 275mm wide by 275mm high. Both have a depth of approximately 12mm across their four individually-finished layers of sustainably-sourced birch ply. Gradients available include Dawn, Day and Dusk.
An optional protective plate made of clear 3mm acrylic can be affixed to the front of the piece with several beautiful brass screws, the better to prevent dust ingress and accidental damage.

Please note that the pictures illustrating this listing are of exemplar specimens of Pipers at the Gates of Dawn, Day and Dusk, and while we take measures to ensure consistency from one run to another, you can expect your item to feature some slight variance. But that, in no small part, is what makes these pieces so special: the uniqueness of the natural wood grain and the consequential intensity of the stains and dyes we apply means that every completed piece we produce truly is one-of-a-kind.
Plans are available in the shop if you fancy trying your hand at making your own version of Pipers at the Gates. You may also be interested in our other Scottish interest products, such as our range of Wid Tartans or our approximation of icons like The Thistle, The Stag and The Coo.
Our take on The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai adds credence to the idea that it may be “the most reproduced image in the history of all art.”
The original woodblock print, an imposing showcase of nature’s dominion over man, was created in late 1831 during the Edo period of Japanese history. It revolutionised the form through its ground-breaking use of Prussian blue and has been imitated ad infinitum in the centuries since, in everything from emoji to blouses and banknotes.
Our loving recreation brings a third dimension to the piece, achieved through the use of six stacked layers of sustainably-sourced and hand-dyed birch ply – that are then painted and engraved – framed by one of oiled walnut.

Although we also stock several more colourful variations, The Great Wave in its natural format is only available in landscape orientation, measuring 410mm wide by 270mm high, with an approximate depth of 21mm across its seven total layers.

Inspired by the weekend woodworker Blake Weber’s exquisite Sunrise Hall Table, Aye to the Sky is a special piece for Wavecrest Woodcraft, as it was the first of our products we had enough confidence in to sell.
Produced using nine layers of sustainably-sourced birch ply, carefully cut and painstakingly stained before being lovingly laminated, each assembly of Aye to the Sky acts an ode to the immeasurable majesty of nature. From the depth of the mountain range that occupies the forefront of this multi-layered mandala to the drama of the art deco-inspired sun that hovers between the hills and the spectacular canvas of the sky, this unique piece is sure to prove a talking point in your household.

A Bit About Us
Home is where the heart is, and our hearts are in Scotland - where we live, which is lucky. There’s me - Niall (nice to meet you!) - my partner in art, our puss, and our pup. Some of us contribute more than others...
Our small business is named after a cosy wee cottage on the isle of Skye from which we've been inspired by the towering waves whose delicate crests crash endlessly against the starkly beautiful shores of Staffin Bay. Also our work is primarily with wood, and so: Wavecrest Woodcraft.
Our Story
We mostly make multi-layered landscapes inspired by nature. We design in Inkscape and cut out our creations using our cherished Glowforge Pro before applying paint, dye, stain and finish to our products by hand. It takes us ages, but we love every bit of it.
Our Process
Sustainability is at the heart of everything we make and do as Wavecrest Woodcraft. From the substrates we source to the adhesives we use to assemble our art, we make every effort to ensure our work enriches the wonderful world we live in rather than taking away from it.
Our Promise
Wid Tartans
Have you ever wondered what tartans would look like if they were made with wood? Well, we at Wavecrest Woodcraft have, and the result – our iconic Wid Tartans – is remarkable.
Although the earliest surviving samples of traditional tartan are around 3,000 years old and of Chinese origin, tartan as we know it today is inextricably Scottish, where it has been used for many centuries on fabric banners and in clothing such as the kilt. Specific tartans are linked to specific Scottish clans and typically take their colours from the natural dyes available in the area a particular clan called home.
Here we have the Buchanan, an unusually colourful green and orange tartan with red and yellow overchecks. The clan’s origin story, understood to be more myth than history, is no less novel. The Buchanan line is said to have taken shape many centuries ago, when a provincial Irish monarch was granted lands to the east of Loch Lomond for services rendered to King Malcolm II of Scotland. Here the Buchanans lived, laughed and loved for seven centuries, until crippling debt brought about in part by several unsuccessful ventures in this war and that led to the loss of the estate in the late 17th century, and eventually the functional dissolution of Clan Buchanan.
Formats / Options
Our wooden rendition of the Buchanan tartan is square in its orientation, available in both medium and large sizes, and requires seven layers of sustainably-sourced and hand-dyed birch ply. The piece is finished off by the addition of an oiled walnut frame complete with a customisable cutout that comes engraved with the name of the tartan as standard.
The medium size Buchanan measures 210mm wide by 210mm high whilst the large measures 275mm wide by 275mm high. Both have a depth of approximately 24mm across eight total layers.
An optional protective plate made of clear 3mm acrylic can be affixed to the front of the piece with several beautiful brass screws, the better to prevent dust ingress and accidental damage.

Make It Your Own
The way we work and the particular products we produce allow our lovely customers any number of opportunities to get properly involved in the items they order. Here’s how:
Some of our products - particularly those intended to be given as gifts, like the Heart of Two Halves you can see in this section - require customisation, but let’s be clear here: almost all of our products can be customised.
In most cases that means a modest but meaningful message; a name or a date, say, engraved somewhere on one of the products we stock in our shop. Maybe you have something more involved in mind; a dedication to someone near and dear to you, or a quote that’s gotten you through darker days incorporated into a design. The good news is: that’s fine!
And the options are almost endless! Where do you want your engraving placed? What font do you want? Do you want your words writ loud and proud, or would you sooner they were somewhat subtler - on the rear of the piece, perhaps, or secreted somewhere on a lower layer where only those in the know would notice. We’re ready and willing to walk you through every stage, in any case. Simply select “Customise My Product” on the appropriate product page and we’ll walk you through the process from there.
Customisation
We’ve got you covered if you’re looking for something more bespoke than a modest message as well. Commissioning work from Wavecrest Woodcraft is (if you ask us) a wonderful way to introduce artistry, warmth and personality into your space.
The process begins - and ends - with you. First things first: you have an idea. Perhaps it starts with a picture of a favourite place or a pet you’d like preserved in dyed and painted ply. Perhaps you own a small business and you’d like a striking landscape of your logo to show off somewhere in your shop. Perhaps there’s a special occasion coming up and you’d like to give your someone special something truly special to mark the moment: a bespoke portrait or a piece themed around them and their particular passions.
Maybe you know exactly what you want - in which case, wonderful! But maybe it’s a bit blurry, this idea you have. Happily, we can help with that as well. For a very reasonable fee - which we’ll deduct from the cost of your commissioned product should you opt to order, as all of our customers have done to date - we’ll take the time to discuss designs. We’ll speak about sizes and styles and recommend materials, and offer up to three revisions to best bring out your vision, but ultimately, the choices are yours to make. We’re just here to help made your idea real.
Whatever you want, we’d love to work with you. Just use the contact form to tell us what you can about what you have in mind and we’ll get the ball rolling within 24 hours.

Birds. Here at Wavecrest Woodcraft, we love them. They can fly after all – and that’s awesome! It also makes their feathers quintessential symbols of liberty, replete with the idea of breaking free, be it from physical, spiritual or emotional constraints. The feather’s literal lightness, meanwhile, suggests a sense of optimism, and the ability, perhaps, to let go of the heavy burdens we each carry.
What’s not to like, right?
How It’s Made
Our versions of The Feather are composed of carefully paired layers of high quality 3mm ply, variously veneered with birch, bubinga and walnut, amongst other hardwoods, before being scored, engraved and cut to size.
These bare layers are then painted with watercolours and / or dyed with a variety of inks and stains before finish is applied and assembly occurs. Last but not least, the final assembly is fitted and fixed into a 25x25cm shadow box frame. These come in three shades: black, white and grey.
Every Piece Unique
Please note that no two of our feathers are the same! As a consequence of the distinctive grain patterns of the hardwood veneers we adhere to our sustainably sourced substrates, as well as our in-house painter’s artistic inclinations, every piece we produce is completely unique: a one-of-a-kind work of art with a depth and complexity certain to catch the eyes of passers-by.
The piece you see here is just one of The Feathers we have available for sale. It is engraved with an accented quote from the poet Emily Dickinson which reads: “Hope is the thing with feathers. It perches in the soul and sings.”
Here are the other versions of The Feather we have in stock at present.

What precisely is it that makes the Yin and Yang such a significant symbol? We at Wavecrest Woodcraft might venture a guess that it is its elegant, aesthetically-appealing representation of a profoundly complex universal truth: that dichotomy, or difference, can define rather than divide. Absent darkness we would not know light, after all; without ugliness we would have no notion of beauty. This product page is perhaps not the place for philosophy, so suffice it instead to simply say that together, the Yang and Yin is a powerful thing.

Leaves are the masterpieces of the natural world. Their beauty lies in their myriad forms, their uniqueness – each and every one a tree’s figurative fingerprint – and in the spectacle of their various transformations: from little bitty buds to gorgeous green growths in spring and then again in autumn, when their chlorophyll fades to reveal brilliant reds, oranges, golds and browns.
If there’s a more profound reminder of nature's artistry, we at Wavecrest Woodcraft would love to see it – and then immediately make our own layered approximation of it!

From our Tartan Tableaus series, showcasing select symbols of Scotland overlaid on an uncommonly customisable tartan backdrop, The Stag is our take on the distinctive red deer that call the highlands and islands of the country home.
The red deer is Scotland's largest deer. Males such as the stag at the centre of this Tartan Tableau have large, branching antlers that increase in size the older they get, measuring up to a metre and with as much as 15kg of heft behind them, making them a much sought-after prize for hunters. Herds can commonly be seen (and indeed heard, what with the deer’s guttural grunts and bleats and barks) in moorland and on mountainsides, often in large numbers. Make the drive to Skye and you’re sure to spot several.

Tartan Tableaus
From our Tartan Tableaus series, showcasing select symbols of Scotland overlaid on an uncommonly customisable tartan backdrop, The Thistle is our three-dimensional rendering of the national flower of Scotland.
The thistle has been a symbol of Scotland for centuries and features on any number of coins, coats of arms and artworks. With its stout spines and pretty purple blossom, its distinctive profile lends itself perfectly to a Tartan Tableau.
Popular legend has it that the thistle became Scotland's emblem after an invading army tried to surprise a sleeping Scottish clan at the Battle of Largs in 1263. The nasty Norsemen took off their shoes so as to move silently, but stepped on a patch of thistles in the process. Their cries of pain alerted the snoozing Scots, who were then able to defeat their luckless assailants.
So, in sum, the thistle: truly beautiful, but a bit on the spikey side. Somewhat like Scotland itself!

From our Tartan Tableaus series, showcasing select symbols of Scotland overlaid on an uncommonly customisable tartan backdrop, The Coo is of course our interpretation of the world-famous highland cow, a breed of rustic cattle known for its long, wide horns and wonderfully woolly, unkempt-looking coat.
Being of Scottish origin, the highland cow is “almost as cold-tolerant as the arctic-dwelling reindeer” who pull Santa’s sleigh, but – rather like Scottish people – it doesn’t have a clue where to put itself when it’s warm. Happily for these cattle, if not for us humans, that’s a rare occasion indeed in Scotland.
The not-so-good news is the species’ conservation status: with the number of registered breeding highland cows in the country having almost halved since 2012, dropping to a population of approximately 3000, these iconic creatures are today considered endangered or at-risk.

Great for Gifting
The cross is a symbol with such power and profundity that it speaks for itself. An enduring icon of faith, sacrifice and redemption, it’s presented here with a modern yet everlasting elegance across eight layers of sustainably sourced and hand-dyed birch ply, adding depth and texture to the design. Take note too of the forced perspective, which requires you the viewer to raise your gaze, inviting contemplation and reflection.
The first variant, entitled Tranquil, features a carefully chosen colour palette, with serene blues, purples and subtle gold accents evocative of a sense of peace, spirituality and – perhaps – divine presence. These hues are often associated with liturgical seasons and heavenly themes, further enhancing the piece's spiritual significance.
The second variant, Vivid, showcases a combination of pinks, oranges, yellows and blues, and brings to mind feelings of joy and celebration. In the Christian faith, these ideas are central to the concept of the Resurrection and the promise of eternal life. The bright colours can be seen to symbolise the light and triumph over darkness and death.
Whichever variant you favour, Perspective on The Cross is a powerful token of faith sure to be cherished for years to come, serving as both an attractive decoration and an object of remembrance, which can offer comfort during difficult times, inspire daily devotion and be a focal point for prayer.
Formats / Options
Perspective on The Cross is portrait in its orientation, and available in both medium and large sizes, in the two variants detailed above. The medium – perfect for display on a mantlepiece or floating shelf – measures 270mm high by 205mm wide, whilst the large is more suited to wall mounting, and measures 372mm high by 275mm wide. Both sizes have a depth of approximately 24mm across their eight layers.

But that, in no small part, is what makes these pieces so special: the uniqueness of the natural wood grain and the consequential intensity of the stains and dyes we apply means that every completed piece we produce truly is one-of-a-kind.
Plans are available in the shop if you fancy trying your hand at making your own version of Perspective on The Cross. You may also be interested in our other faith-based products, such as our shadowboxed Celtic Cross.
Perfect for celebrating Valentine’s Day, anniversaries or any significant milestone in a loving relationship, this customisable piece comes in two parts that together make one heart.
At the heart of the, ah, heart of the design is an intricate, multi-layered arrangement of roses dyed and painted in shades of red, pink and purple, supported by a network of lush green leaves. This pattern is intended to be more than merely decorative; in addition, it represents the tremendous depth and complexity of romantic love in all its forms.
As a gift, it transcends simple sentimentality. It is a tangible metaphor for commitment: a reminder that while you and your partner are two separate people, in your lives and in your love you are one. Crafted from seven contrasting layers of sustainably sourced black walnut and bright birch plywood, One Heart, Two Parts is an artful and enduring declaration of devotion.
Formats / Options
As noted, One Heart, Two Parts is presented in two assemblies that can (and we say should) be placed together to make a single piece, landscape in its orientation, and available in both medium and large sizes.
Taken as a single piece, the medium size measures 400mm wide by 275mm high whilst the large measures 550mm wide by 375mm high. Both sizes have a depth of approximately 18mm across their seven total layers, and a depth of 21mm if you opt to add a protective plate made of clear 3mm acrylic, which can be affixed to the front of One Heart, Two Parts with several beautiful brass screws, the better to prevent dust ingress and accidental damage.
Unlike the majority of our products, One Heart, Two Partsrequires customisation. Although you may of course choose to use the available space differently, it is intended to showcase a pair of names in the upper banners and a short message or quote suited to each partner in the lower banners. It is vital that you provide these either at checkout or by using our contact form after you’ve placed your order.

Created as a direct response to a certain orange politician’s attempt to eradicate “gender ideology,” Heart in Hands (Trans) is a powerful piece that serves as both a vibrant tribute to the transgender community and a fierce protest against the systematic anti-trans policies advanced by his odious administration.
The design features two hands forming a heart – a universal gesture of care, unity and love –cradled within which we find a halo composed of the trans flag’s colours. This riot of pink, blue and white symbolizes the profound joy, diversity and validity of trans lives, embodying a community that is resilient, radiant and utterly unwilling to be erased.
Heart in Hands (Trans) stands as a strong artistic statement that no executive order will ever extinguish the inherent worth of the transgender community. It is a declaration of love in the face of hate – and a demand for a future where all trans individuals are protected, celebrated and free.
