Tartan Tableaus: The Stag
From our Tartan Tableaus series, showcasing select symbols of Scotland overlaid on an uncommonly customisable tartan backdrop, The Stag is our take on the distinctive red deer that call the highlands and islands of the country home.
The red deer is Scotland's largest deer. Males such as the stag at the centre of this Tartan Tableau have large, branching antlers that increase in size the older they get, measuring up to a metre and with as much as 15kg of heft behind them, making them a much sought-after prize for hunters. Herds can commonly be seen (and indeed heard, what with the deer’s guttural grunts and bleats and barks) in moorland and on mountainsides, often in large numbers. Make the drive to Skye and you’re sure to spot several.
Formats / Options
The Stag is square in its orientation, available in both medium and large sizes, and with a variety of colour schemes applied to the four layers of sustainably-sourced and hand-dyed birch ply that make up the tartan backdrop and support the centrepiece, which is comprised of walnut, bubinga and birch.
The medium size measures 235mm wide by 235mm high, with a depth of approximately 15mm across its five total layers. Colour schemes available include Spirit of Scotland, MacLeod of Lewis and Simple Stewart.
An optional protective plate made of clear 3mm acrylic can be affixed to the front of the piece with several beautiful brass screws, the better to prevent dust ingress and accidental damage.
Other
Please note that the pictures illustrating this listing are of a single specimen of The Stag, and while we take measures to ensure consistency from one run to another, you can expect your item to feature some slight variance. But that, in no small part, is what makes these pieces so special: the uniqueness of the natural wood grain and the consequential intensity of the stains and dyes we apply means that every completed piece we produce truly is one-of-a-kind.
Plans are available in the shop if you fancy trying your hand at making your own version of The Stag. You may also be interested in our other Tartan Tableaus, such as The Coo and The Thistle, as well as our wide range of Wid Tartans.
