Tartan Tableaus: The Thistle
From our Tartan Tableaus series, showcasing select symbols of Scotland overlaid on an uncommonly customisable tartan backdrop, The Thistle is our three-dimensional rendering of the national flower of Scotland.
The thistle has been a symbol of Scotland for centuries and features on any number of coins, coats of arms and artworks. With its stout spines and pretty purple blossom, its distinctive profile lends itself perfectly to a Tartan Tableau.
Popular legend has it that the thistle became Scotland's emblem after an invading army tried to surprise a sleeping Scottish clan at the Battle of Largs in 1263. The nasty Norsemen took off their shoes so as to move silently, but stepped on a patch of thistles in the process. Their cries of pain alerted the snoozing Scots, who were then able to defeat their luckless assailants.
So, in sum, the thistle: truly beautiful, but a bit on the spikey side. Somewhat like Scotland itself!
Formats / Options
The Thistle is square in its orientation, available in both medium and large sizes, and with a variety of colour schemes applied to the four layers of sustainably-sourced and hand-dyed birch ply that make up the tartan backdrop and support the centrepiece.
The medium size measures 235mm wide by 235mm high, with a depth of approximately 15mm across its five total layers. Colour schemes available include Spirit of Scotland, MacLeod of Lewis and Simple Stewart.
An optional protective plate made of clear 3mm acrylic can be affixed to the front of the piece with several beautiful brass screws, the better to prevent dust ingress and accidental damage.
Other
Please note that the pictures illustrating this listing are of a single specimen of The Thistle, and while we take measures to ensure consistency from one run to another, you can expect your item to feature some slight variance. But that, in no small part, is what makes these pieces so special: the uniqueness of the natural wood grain and the consequential intensity of the stains and dyes we apply means that every completed piece we produce truly is one-of-a-kind.
Plans are available in the shop if you’d prefer to make your own version of The Thistle. You may also be interested in our other Tartan Tableaus, such The Coo and The Stag, as well as our wide range of Wid Tartans.
