Wid Tartans: Buchanan

from £45.00

Have you ever wondered what tartans would look like if they were made with wood? Well, we at Wavecrest Woodcraft have, and the result – our iconic Wid Tartans – is remarkable.

Although the earliest surviving samples of traditional tartan are around 3,000 years old and of Chinese origin, tartan as we know it today is inextricably Scottish, where it has been used for many centuries on fabric banners and in clothing such as the kilt. Specific tartans are linked to specific Scottish clans and typically take their colours from the natural dyes available in the area a particular clan called home.

Here we have the Buchanan, an unusually colourful green and orange tartan with red and yellow overchecks. The clan’s origin story, understood to be more myth than history, is no less novel. The Buchanan line is said to have taken shape many centuries ago, when a provincial Irish monarch was granted lands to the east of Loch Lomond for services rendered to King Malcolm II of Scotland. Here the Buchanans lived, laughed and loved for seven centuries, until crippling debt brought about in part by several unsuccessful ventures in this war and that led to the loss of the estate in the late 17th century, and eventually the functional dissolution of Clan Buchanan.

Formats / Options

Our wooden rendition of the Buchanan tartan is square in its orientation, available in both medium and large sizes, and requires seven layers of sustainably-sourced and hand-dyed birch ply. The piece is finished off by the addition of an oiled walnut frame complete with a customisable cutout that comes engraved with the name of the tartan as standard.

The medium size Buchanan measures 210mm wide by 210mm high whilst the large measures 275mm wide by 275mm high. Both have a depth of approximately 24mm across eight total layers.

An optional protective plate made of clear 3mm acrylic can be affixed to the front of the piece with several beautiful brass screws, the better to prevent dust ingress and accidental damage.

Please note that the pictures illustrating this listing are of a single specimen of our Buchanan Wid Tartan, and while we take measures to ensure consistency from one run to another, you can expect your item to feature some slight variance. But that, in no small part, is what makes these pieces so special: the uniqueness of the natural wood grain and the consequential intensity of the stains and dyes we apply means that every completed piece we produce truly is one-of-a-kind.

Plans are available in the shop if you fancy trying your hand at making your own version of our Buchanan. You may also be interested in our other Wid Tartans, such as Anderson Ancient, Royal Stewart or Spirit of Scotland, as well as our wide range of Tartan Tableaus, which feature iconic centrepieces associated with Scotland (think thistles, stags and so on) atop a more standard tartan backdrop.
