Have you ever wondered what tartans would look like if they were made with wood? Well, we at Wavecrest Woodcraft have, and the result – our iconic Wid Tartans – is remarkable.
Although the earliest surviving samples of traditional tartan are around 3,000 years old and of Chinese origin, tartan as we know it today is inextricably Scottish, where it has been used for many centuries on fabric banners and in clothing such as the kilt. Specific tartans are linked to specific Scottish clans and typically take their colours from the natural dyes available in the area a particular clan called home.
Here we have the Spirit of Scotland, with its navy and purple base and bright blue and green overchecks. Designed only a matter of decades ago by Michael King, the Spirit of Scotland is a clanless tartan, meaning it can be worn by anyone regardless of their heritage or affiliation, making it a popular (and pretty!) choice for weddings and other such functions in Scotland.
Formats / Options
Our wooden rendition of the Spirit of Scotland tartan is square in its orientation, available in both medium and large sizes, and requires seven layers of sustainably-sourced and hand-dyed birch ply. The piece is finished off by the addition of an oiled walnut frame complete with a customisable cutout that comes engraved with the name of the tartan as standard.
The medium size Spirit of Scotland measures 210mm wide by 210mm high whilst the large measures 275mm wide by 275mm high. Both have a depth of approximately 21mm across six layers.
An optional protective plate made of clear 3mm acrylic can be affixed to the front of the piece with several beautiful brass screws, the better to prevent dust ingress and accidental damage.
