The Elephant in the Room
The Elephant in the Room is the result of a private commission that uses the same sunburst pattern designed for Aye to the Sky as its backdrop, and although we had no intention of making it widely available, it’s been a firm favourite at craft fairs, especially with the wee ones who want to support Wavecrest Woodcraft in some form. So! Anyone for a few fun elephant facts?
Here’s a good one to get us started: despite being the largest land animal, the elephant is the only mammal that can’t jump. Their legs simply aren’t designed to propel their gargantuan bodies off the ground. Also they’re deathly afraid of bees, to the extent that farmers in some African countries use beehive fences to protect their crops.
On a purely aesthetic note, did you know that elephants are one of the only mammals, besides humans, to have a chin? Before someone mentions monkeys, they have sloping lower jaws. Elephants, though – proper chins!
Last fact before we get back to business: the saying "an elephant never forgets" is actually rooted in truth. They possess the largest brains of all land animals, and their temporal lobes – the area of the brain associated with memory – are exceptionally developed. That’s why they remember individual humans and other elephants, in some cases after decades of separation.
Elephants, eh? Got to love them.
Formats / Options
The Elephant in the Room is square in its orientation, and available in both medium and large sizes. The medium – perfect for display on a mantlepiece or floating shelf – measures 200mm wide by 200mm high, whilst the large is more suited to wall mounting, and measures 275mm wide by 275mm high. Both sizes have a depth of approximately 12mm across their four total layers.
An optional protective plate made of clear 3mm acrylic can be affixed to the front of the piece with several beautiful brass screws, the better to prevent dust ingress and accidental damage.
Other
Please note that the pictures illustrating this listing are of a single specimen of The Elephant in the Room, and while we take measures to ensure consistency from one run to another, you can expect your item to feature some slight variance. But that, in no small part, is what makes these pieces so special: the uniqueness of the natural wood grain and the consequential intensity of the stains and dyes we apply means that every completed piece we produce truly is one-of-a-kind.
Plans are available in the shop if you fancy trying your hand at making your own version of The Elephant in the Room. You may also be interested in Aye to the Sky, or the other plywood animals amongst our offerings, such as The Coo and The Stag.
