Pipers at the Gates
There are few symbols more closely associated with Scotland than the bagpipes, and the sight of the pipers who play them is to many preferable to the... shall we say “intense” sound said instruments produce.
Pipers at the Gates, named after the sublime 1967 Pink Floyd album, is a striking showcase of contrast in its colours and its subjects. The first piece in our Silhouette Series depicts a pair of pipers posed in such a way as to suggest stillness. The flock of birds in the background are anything but. Disturbed no doubt by the unearthly noise of Scotland’s traditional instruments, the birds’ dynamic movement – up, up and away – takes them high into the sky, surrendering the ground to the pipers, who have perhaps paused in their playing to study the disturbance.
Formats / Options
Redolent of a sense of release and freedom, Pipers at the Gates is square in its orientation, available in both medium and large sizes, and with a variety of gradients applied to the lowermost layer.
The medium size measures 200mm wide by 200mm high whilst the large measures 275mm wide by 275mm high. Both have a depth of approximately 12mm across their four individually-finished layers of sustainably-sourced birch ply. Gradients available include Dawn, Day and Dusk.
An optional protective plate made of clear 3mm acrylic can be affixed to the front of the piece with several beautiful brass screws, the better to prevent dust ingress and accidental damage.
Other
Please note that the pictures illustrating this listing are of exemplar specimens of Pipers at the Gates of Dawn, Day and Dusk, and while we take measures to ensure consistency from one run to another, you can expect your item to feature some slight variance. But that, in no small part, is what makes these pieces so special: the uniqueness of the natural wood grain and the consequential intensity of the stains and dyes we apply means that every completed piece we produce truly is one-of-a-kind.
Plans are available in the shop if you fancy trying your hand at making your own version of Pipers at the Gates. You may also be interested in our other Scottish interest products, such as our range of Wid Tartans or our approximation of icons like The Thistle, The Stag and The Coo.
